Pikaland giveaway: winner & portrait

cerena-leigh, born under a lucky star, was the winner of my Pikaland giveaway. she won a custom ink portrait and requested owls and filigree to adorn her face:

i know i've been a bit absent lately with the holiday. we've received a sea of snow over here so i've been busy pretending i'm a snow dragon, white fire, etc. as you can imagine, that takes up quite a bit of time but i'll be back with a slew of new posts soon.

stay warm! all of you.

q&a: on life

donkeyjote asked: what do you do when it seems that all of life's possible truths end in paradox? (it's not 'take another hit', i tried that already)

a. accept it.
b. build a labyrinth in your backyard and spend your days drinking/practicing magick.

I LIKE BIRDS

I LIKE BIRDS, an exhibition curated by one of my favorite humans, Jill Wickenheisser, opened last Friday in Newark, NJ. on display? seriously amazing work by ten (DC Smith, Marshall Okin, Joe Waks, Dennis Dalelio, Eric Beckerich, Kelly Heck, Jacqueline Cruz, Troy Barrett, VanOs) wonderful avian-inspired artists, including photography, paintings, and a sculpted bird that i wanted to name totoro (or martin) and fly away with.

here is one of the pieces i created for the show:

nobody knows you the way you know you

the words are by Passion Pit, a local band i'm quite proud of (and biased towards). if you are in the tri-state area, you can check out the show until February 1st at:

Art Kitchen
61 Halsey St.
Newark, NJ 01702.

i finished a tattoo commission awhile ago, and my wonderful client, Connie, just sent me a few photographs of her new ink. while this was originally supposed to be a half-sleeve, she turned it into a full rib tattoo! it looks quite lovely on her bones.

my love's another kind

i finally got around to doing another band poster- this time i chose one of my personal favorites: the moody and harmonious Grizzly Bear, who can color me always. the poster reads “my love’s another kind,” a quote from the beautiful “lullabye”.

when I clung to you there was nothing to hold on tight with, you left me adrift/Colorado, what now?
16”x20” prints are available for $25 in my shop. :]

London Fashion Week for Amelia's Magazine

I’ve been busy doing a few more fashion illustrations for Amelia’s Magazine, which have been published recently.

For a piece on the new Vivienne Westwood Exhibition at Selfridges in London, I drew a pair of 1973 Seditionary shoes:

vivienne westwood's fish
I did two versions of this drawing- the second version was with a fish (above). The original, which ran in Amelia’s Magazine, is with a teacup.

I also did a Mary Katrantzou piece for an article about London’s Fashion Week Preview:

tattooed - lions and dogwood trees

last week, i finished a commissioned tattoo illustration for artist & motion designer Mancel Lindsey. Mancel wanted a half-sleeve composed of: 1) a dogwood tree entwined with 2) a lion’s face and 3) adorned with various foliage- the meaning of which you can read on his blog.

this was a very exciting project for me to work on, and i’m thrilled with the results! his tattoo looks fabulous and i cannot wait to see how it looks with the color added.

Doublethink Design interview

i was lucky enough to be interviewed by the wonderful Chiara of Doublethink Design. here's a little snippet- click here for the entire interview.

DD: How long have you been creating art for? How has your style evolved since you first began?
M: I’ve been creating art since I was a very little girl, using markers and pencils before moving onto watercolors and acrylic ink. Around age 8, I became very interested in writing and illustrating my own stories, a passion that has refused to leave me even 15 years later. My style has evolved immensely since I first started — as I discovered new inspirations, textures, and techniques, I became more comfortable with developing my own voice rather than simply imitating what I see in the world around me.

DD: Were you formally trained in art or are you self taught? Do you think it has helped you or hindered you?
M: I’m a self-taught artist - everything I create is the result of exploration and experimentation. I recently graduated from college with a degree in English and a degree in Journalism & Media Studies. Because I’m self-taught, I think I’ve been able to develop my individual style without becoming too heavily influenced by any one era, teacher, or technique—in this way, I am thankful. On the other hand, do I wish I could have spent the last four years painting and drawing instead of writing papers? You bet.

DD: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
M: A writer.
